A one-day beginners’ course to help you prevent and solve diesel engine failure.
Mechanical failure is the main cause of rescue call-outs to cruisers. Basic maintenance and engine
care will help ensure that you are not part of this statistic.
Most engine problems can be avoided by taking simple precautions, and you don’t need a detailed
mechanical knowledge.
This course teaches you how your engine works, how to keep it healthy by using basic checks and
maintenance procedures, and how to get it started again in the event of a breakdown.
Course topics include:
• the principles of diesel engine operation
• the systems and parts of the engine
• fault finding
• rectification of common problems
• bleeding the fuel system
• changing the impeller
• routine maintenance
• winter lay-up procedures

Our one-day course covers first aid subjects, but from a boating perspective. It is
aimed at anyone who goes afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, estuaries or on
cross channel passages.
In a medical emergency a little first aid knowledge and immediate action can save lives, especially
in remote locations. This one-day course is designed to provide a working knowledge of first aid
for people using small craft and to support skippers.
It fulfils the requirements for:
• professional skippers of small craft working within 60 miles of a safe haven, including
Boatmasters;
• the Senior First Aid certificate needed by offshore racers subject to ISAF's regulations on
first aid training (OSR 4.08.4).
The course is recommended by the MCA and HSE.
The subjects specific to boating include:
• the recovery position in a confined space
• CPR, including the drowning protocol
• cold shock and hypothermia fromimmersion and/or exposure
• seasickness and dehydration

A one-day course for anyone going to sea, providing an understanding of how to use
the safety equipment on board your boat.
A genuine lifesaver
Cruising is one of the safest leisure sporting activities, and 99.9% of those afloat will never use
their liferaft. However, if you are part of the unlucky 0.1% your chances of survival will be greatly
increased if you understand how to use the equipment and how to help yourself.
It is a well-proven fact that, in the event of an emergency at sea, people with training are more
likely to survive.
An important part of the course is a practical session in a swimming pool. Experience first hand the
problems of entering an uncooperative liferaft and assisting others while fully kitted out in wet
weather gear and a lifejacket.
Course topics include:
• liferafts and the equipment they contain
• survival techniques
• the design of lifejackets
• medical aspects of sea survival
search and rescue techniques

Each year approximately 4,500 people apply to the RYA for a commercial endorsement in order to use their RYA qualifications professionally as skipper or crew. You could be doing anything from delivering a new 35’ yacht or driving a workboat with lifting and towing gear, to running a superyacht in the Med. Whatever your job is on board, in the commercial world you are a professional seafarer. As such, you are no different from the captain of a cruise liner – you have a duty of care to crew, passengers, and other water users, and you will be held to account if things go wrong.
The course is broken down into four modules:
All new applicants for a commercially endorsed RYA Certificate of Competence must first pass the PPR course. Anyone renewing a commercially endorsed RYA Certificate of Competence must pass the PPR course prior to their next renewal date, if they haven't already done so.
Exemptions from this course
If you hold an MCA Deck Officer's Certificate of Competence as Officer of the Watch or above, Master 200* or Master 500 you do not need to take the PPR course. Please send a copy of your MCA certificate with your application or renewal form for your commercial endorsement.
* Please note the 'Master 200' referred to here is the MCA Master 200gt STCW qualification. This is not the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster™ qualification

Anyone requiring an ICC valid for inland waters must pass the CEVNI Test.
A valid ICC is often required for cruising Europe’s inland waters.
To validate your ICC (International Certificate of Competence) for inland waters you must take the CEVNI test, which checks your knowledge of the rules and signs that skippers of pleasure craft are expected to know and follow.
The “RYA European waterways regulations (the CEVNI rules explained)” publication G17 provides the information you need to learn the code in a clear and concise way – a sample paper can be found at the back of the book.

Arranging to take the CEVNI test online
It is possible to take your CEVNI test online, anywhere, anytime as an alternative to the paper-based test.

The ICC is a certificate which is intended to provide evidence of competence when requested by officials in foreign countries.
The ICC (or to give it its full title International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft) is a certificate which is intended to provide evidence of competence when requested by officials in foreign countries. It is sometimes known as the International Certificate of Competence.
It is issued under the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Inland Transport Committee Working Party on Inland Water Transport Resolution 40. It is this resolution which details how and to whom the ICC may be issued, the syllabus requirements, the layout of the certificate and it also lists the countries which have notified the UNECE Secretariat that they have accepted the resolution.
The UK Government has accepted Resolution 40 and has authorised the RYA to issue the ICC on its behalf.
