STCW BASIC

STCW FIRE PREVENTION & FIRE FIGHTING 

Approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency this ‘open enrolment’ course is designed to meet the requirements laid down in STCW2010 for updated proficiency in basic fire prevention & fire fighting. The student will refresh their knowledge gained during STCW95 basic fire prevention and fire fighting training.

At the end of the course the student will be able to demonstrate the ability to act as a member of a fire party and be able to respond to emergency situations involving fire on board ship.

Who is this course for?
Open enrolment – For those who are training to work in the Maritime Industry and need an STCW95 certificate or seeking employment or work engaged in any capacity on board a sea going vessel.

Course requirements:

  • Minimum age: 18
  • Medically fit and healthy – a medical form will be required
  • It is required that individuals need to submit documentary evidence of having completed an STCW Basic
    Fire Fighting Course in advance of attendance

Teaching Ratio: 16:1 and 8:1 during practical sessions

Requirements:

  • Workboat code (Edition 2) – Skippers and mates of vessels under 15m
  • Boatmaster BML T1 & T2 – All sizes not fitted with breathing apparatus 
  • Best practise training for code or pleasure vessel skippers and mates under 24m 
  • Best practise training for offshore racing skipper and mates

Certification

Continuous practical assessment with full and active debrief of exercise. Following successful completion of the course a renewed MCA approved STCW2010 certificate may be issued.

An STCW 2010 Advanced Course is also available.

Course Content:

  • The triangle of fire
  • Theory of combustion   
  • Classification of fires (A, B, C & D)
  • Fire protection
  • Fire extinguishing principles
  • Correct extinguishing equipment and methods for each type .
  • Actions to take to isolate or reduce fire, gas, electric & fuel shut offs.
  •    Basic fire fighting techniques
  •    Engine room fires
  •    Types of extinguishers including: water, dry powdered, foam, CO2, clean agents & fire blanket
  • How to extinguish fire including practical demonstration of the use of extinguishers 
  • Location of fire fighting equipment on a vessel 
  • Regulation and considerations on vessels
  •    Flashover and backdraft
  •    Hose running
  •    Physiology of respiration
  •    Breathing apparatus
  •    Casualty handling
  •    Search and rescue


Courses are non-residential, so accommodation is required in one of the many hotels or guest houses near the Centre. We can provide a list of recommendations.
